fig and walnut cereal

cereal is one of my breakfast staples. but i like to dress it up with a little fruit and nut each day so its a little healthier and lends a bit more texture and flavor.

but recently, i've had a little mishap working through my kiwis.
i noticed that when i add kiwis, the milk thickens towards the end.
(like in a starchy sauce-y kinda way.. which is yuck!)

my milk is definitely not spoilt.
i tried it a few times with different variation of cereal and nuts but i think its the kiwi!

any clues? is it the acid (ie citrus fruits too?)
or specifically kiwis?

and oh! how do you like your cereal?
im looking for new combinations! :)

  1. Mmm I love figs! I also like adding granola and a tablespoon or 2 of yogurt (strawberry flavour is my favourite) to my cereal.

Think I read before that kiwi has some sort of enzyme that reacts with milk. That's probably why your milk thickens towards the end.

  2. It's the citrus in the kiwi
I love honey and yogurt with cereal or with soy milk/rice milk. Homemade granola too! Similar to Erica!

  3. Definitely cereal and yoghurt with slivered almonds or pecans (my favourite nuts). I actually hate milk on so I only have cereal with yoghurt. Or in sinful days, dust unsweetened cocoa powder!

  4. I always thought kiwis had enzymes in them because sometimes your tongue feels a bit numb after you have eaten one. My parents agreed with me (they're scientists) so I assumed it was true. Anyway it's probably those enzymes denaturing the milk proteins causing coagulation...yuck!

Wow you eat so little cereal! I usually have a great big bowl! When I eat cereal I'm more lazy than you....I buy the granola that contains lots of freezedried fruit in it - my favourites are blueberries and raspeberries! xD And that's about as exciting as it gets.

Although, when I was a kid my parents used to sometimes make a batch of toasted sesame seeds and then blend it with some sugar to make this sweet sesame powder. It tastes SO good on plan cornflakes. Yum!!!!

    1. Hahahah good eye! I usually eat more just that a huge bowl doesn't make a dainty picture so I took this picture before topping up the milk and cereal! (awww busted!!)

Thanks for the tips! I never knew!!! I guess even of I eat them separately it would happen in my tummy, right?!

Oooo the sesame powder sounds like something you buy in the supermarket in Japan that you eat with dessert or ice cream! It's sooo Yums! I'll try that on cereal!!
