craft :: blankie in the making

so i've recently picked up crocheting. but unlike normal people who slowly progress from practice squares to scarves then to hats and then to bigger thing... i decided i'd make a blanket!! knitted fabrics do have a bad reputation for looking old but i found this great pattern for a trendy granny stripe blanket from purlbee! oh love!

so with my pattern and my iphone translator, i hit the stores!

the selection was overwhelming! and i didn't know where to start! this kind old man felt sorry for me and gathered his whole team of knitting grannies to help. they insisted that i couldn't make a synthetic wool blanket as my first ever project. "has to be 100 % wool so its soft" as he makes his squishy comfy face holding my imaginary blankie-to-be.

im such a sucker. so i got TWENTY of these squishy soft babies..
that obviously cost me and arm and a leg.

then the ladies told me that i NEEDED these awesome tools.
that cost 3 times more than the regular ones..

i picked this out as an accent color. its sparkley and alpaca wool!
soo luxurious!!!

a cute little test square for my pattern.

and it all begins...

ooo i can't wait till it becomes a real blankie.
its so slow-moving but im really excited to see the end product!!

have a cosy weekend!

xx

  1. oooo good luck with your first ever blankie! :D

Awwww!! Bless them for trying to help you!

I remember my first knitting project, I went to the oldest department store in my town which had only old grannies working in the entire store. I was picking out needles to be told by the nice old granny assistant ' you don't want to be paying that much for needles dear! I am sure you can pick up some perfectly adequate ones for about a £1 from Oxfam down the road!' LOL

This was a proper old school store that sells a range of school uniforms, craft-ware and other things. The entire store still operated one central cashier with lots of tube shutes to carry the cash to them! I wish I had appreciated it a bit more when I lived in that town! It's actually a piece of history now I think about it.

Sorry I went on a little ramble there.....

I love the sparkly accent wool!!!

  2. Your pattern is really nice! Not a basic pattern too! The expensive hooks are a very good investment. They really make the process more comfortable. I have one too and I love it.

  14. I have a blankie that looks almost identical to the one you're making, and I've had it since I was born, so it's been around for 27 years... looking a little ragged now but very loved. Hopefully yours lives as long as mine :o)

  15. Omg! I've been meaning to try! Like I don't have enough things on my hand. You don't know how tempted I'm to go scour for tools and supplies right now. The husb is simply shaking his head, in disgust. But but... Afghh.
