camera review for olympus ep3

we're trying something new here today!

i've gotten a few emails from our readers about camera & tech-y things. and each time i get my tech support team to answer those questions. its such a shame to not share the good stuff my tech support writes because he pours his heart and soul into it. so i asked if he would share a few cute tips here and there with y'all!

so i present you my lovely husband, daniel ::

Hi everyone!

It is my great honor to be guest-posting today about my latest camera "investment" - my little Olympus E-P3!

The Olympus E-P3 belongs to the relatively new category of mirrorless cameras which have become popular for being more compact than digital SLR cameras but providing better image quality than regular point-and-shoots, together with the ability to change lenses.  That said, I only use one lens at the moment - a 20mm f/1.7 lens by Panasonic.

Panasonic and Olympus both use the same lens mounting system (called "Micro Four Thirds"), which is why it's possible to mix and match the camera body and lens.  I really like this lens because it is very compact, and the f/1.7 aperture means that photos can have a sharp subject and nice blurry backgrounds!

The only downside of this combination is that there's no zoom - so I often have to walk forward or back to get the right framing, and this can leave me vulnerable to snowball attack from impatient models...

I still love my Nikon D700, especially for low light situations or for a more studio lighting look (like the first couple of photos above) - but it's much lighter and easier to carry the E-P3 around (especially when we're out with Muu), and the combination of clean images, nice colours and a touch screen (for quick and easy focusing) makes this camera a winner for everyday and travel use!

Any questions are very welcome - and hope you keep liking the photos and my wonderful wife's blog!!

  1. Hi Daniel!! I guessed that most of the photos were taken by you, as they have the same feel and quality to them regardless of whether or not Zhing is in the photo! You are a wonderful photographer - I ought to get my boyfriend to learn some tips from reading this blog. (I show him muu-kun very often though!)

Thank you for this camera review!

  2. Hi Daniel. Great post. But the IT idiot in me is happy with my point-and-shoot/always in auto function mode camera.
Keep the posts coming! I'll probably understand it one day.....

  5. Great post, Daniel!! I wish that Taro would be my photographer, but he doesn't have the patience or interest. It's already hard enough to get him to hold off on eating so I can take a photo! I'm still looking for a compact camera to replace my SLR. I was thinking about getting the Canon D100, but the reviews don't live up to my expectations. Next time, I'll try to lay off of the decorating and cooking and try to follow you around when you take pics so I can copy what you do!

  7. Ooh you are tempting me. Do you know how does this camera compares to the Sony Nex 3/5?

  8. Hello Daniel! Great post. :D So this is the little camera in charge of the great photos taken for this blog. Thanks for sharing this little detail! I don't own a DSLR, but this one sounds like a good alternative! And it seems to do the same job as a big one would. Hoping to see more posts from you here too!

  9. Awesome! I've 'just' gotten the epl2 and am rather impressed with the quality. Having just come from the canon 1000d, I keep having to remind myself not to stuff my face into the non-existent viewfinder.

And I'm totally green with envy that you got the Panasonic lens. It's a great combo but not one my pockets allow for right now! So, just gotta make do with the kit lens.

  13. @Rach

Sure, but actually I think our "secret" is that we just really take a lot of photos of Muu, so he's used to it now!!

I've heard that the Sony Nex cameras have very good image quality and performance in low light (because they use a bigger sensor, like a dSLR). In the end, I just felt the Nex lenses were a bit bulky and found the combination of physical controls and touch screen on the E-P3 more intuitive for me when I was trying out cameras.

Thanks! Actually, we also have two dSLR cameras, a Nikon D80 and a Nikon D700, that we still use for many of the photos too... perhaps more on those another day!

  19. Thanks Daniel! I have the EP1, which I bought SOLEY for the silver vintage look that it had even though the EP2 was available when I was making my purchase. :) Any suggestions on whether you would get a marco lens next or a panoramic lens next? Have been thinking about my needs, but can't seem to decide. -sa.
