nails: real or fake???

im not very experimental with my nail colours & styles. unless its for a party/occasion, i'd definitely be in OPI "Tickle my France-y" or Essie "Prima Ballerina".

after a long conversation with my manicurist, whom i've known for 9 years (!!), she feels like nails for weddings should be a little fancier, 3d flowers, diamond encrusted & the full works. and she insists that its her honor to do my wedding nails for me so she wants it to be a wedding gift. the little problem is, i leave singapore this weekend, 9 days till the actual wedding day. so she is recommending gel nails.

i've never tried that before but here's a picture of my recent experiment with fake tips. they felt so weird and no offense, i thought they looked a little campy. i couldn't craft, i couldn't open my own coke can and i was fussing over them 24/7. kinda irritating & bimbotic.

what do you think? stick to my normal boring colours?
or should i bling things up??

has anyone given gel nails a go? did you like it?
was it uncomfortable?

  1. haha... even though i did my nails the day before in the boring french base i love, and added glitter to the tips, i was super uncomfortable after i did it! Can't imagine having it for 9 days... i'm definitely not a medicure girl :)

  2. me too!! i've a good mind to just stick to what im used to.
but its a gift and i feel rude to turn down the offer. plus i don't wanna shock my mum with my unconvential nail preferences.. she wears her bling and nailart on a regular basis!!!

  3. personally - and no offense to anybody to loves having them - i find gel/fake nails a bit trashy, especially when they're all encrusted and blinged up. i don't know you super well, but looking at your past photos/style/inspiration boards, i think a simple classic manicure is much more suited to you. and i'm sure your mum will be fine with whatever you choose...it's YOUR wedding after all!
as a compromise, how about having her do gel nails in a French manicure style...then if you hate them, just have them removed and redone in a regular French manicure just before the wedding. your manicurist won't be able to tell from the photos!

  4. Both are nice in their own ways but do pick one which goes better with your outfits.

  5. Like Pei, I am NOT a fan of fake nails. It's a wedding, keep it classic and simple. A perfect French mani is the way to go.
Think about it: do you really want to look back at the wedding photos and realised what a big mistake those nails were? They don't look good on a day-to-day basis and it's even more INAPPROPRIATE for a wedding, esp your own.

  6. Sorry I have very strong opinion on fake nails. Ask yourself would Jackie O or Audrey Hepburn have them and with bling? I doubt it!

  7. Well, guess what, I *just* DID gel for my nails, and my wedding is like 11 days away!
I must say that it's really pretty and not thrashy, if you pick the correct designs. :) Some of them can be really classy, especially for ladies who have problems in keeping their nails long for french manicure etc.
Besides, I like the idea of having my polishes not wearing off no matter how careless I am!
Bad thing is... I'm still not used to the gel nails, so typing is hard, and so is buttoning my blouse. -___-

  9. my outfits are so varied but maybe the simple option (ie plain french) might work best. at least i won't be fussing when a crystal drop!!!

  17. my 2 cents: get french manicure cos it wont go outta fashion! also when you look back 60 years later, you wont be going "urgh cant believe i did that!"
    :P

  18. Haha! You're not an ah pek, oh my gosh! :O
For mine, I only did nail art for the ring finger, so running through my hair isn't that much of a problem. Playing a piano is though!
I've been having it since Friday already, so it's coming to a week and everything still looks good! ;)

  22. Sorry if I sounded super bitchy (it's the hormones I tell ya). If your nails are naturally heathy and strong and they grow out nicely, there's absolutely no need for fakes. To spruce things up, like u mentioned, do nail art on your ring finger and classic French for the rest :)

  23. I wear acrylics all the time and love them, as long as you get them natural looking - ie, no square tips, nice and oval shaped, and not too thick.
In Melbourne, there's an incredible nail place near Quat Quatta called The Nail Shoppe and Melanie is amazing if you need touchups/get them redone.
I say go the gel nails, they are SO different to fake tips and so strong! (I actually get them because I want to be able to wash dishes, open cans, etc without them breaking!)

  25. am abit late in the game. i got some gel nails to scratch the proverbial itch if you will.
I LOVED mine. I could do everything that I usually did. but it felt weird. Like it's not mine which it wasn't. Not sure if that makes sense. The aftermath of gel nails is horrible, my nails were shattered, weak..effectively paperthin. I wouldn't do it again and, honestly I've seen yours and you could just do a wedding manicure with glitter/gloss abit of french perhaps. Unless someone had nubbins for nails, I wouldn't suggest gel/acrylic nails
A picture if you like of my gel nails. I am arse at figuring out how to embed so, DIY click please? :P

  26. ohhhh cute! :) are yours gel extensions or your own nails. i got gel nails (no extension) in the end and so far so good. no signs of chipping.
but *touch wood* we're only at day 4!! :)

  27. totally gel nails with extensions. i have paperthin nails. I'd never be able to grow them to that length. those gel nails would last Chernobyl, i tell you!

  28. wow!! gorgeous tho!! :) im dreading the after effect. maybe i'll just grow them out naturally!!! *yikes*
