snuggles anybody?

i've been feeling a little maternal recently. (just for the reconds,  , i blame it on zach and his madly cute sleeping position.)

so, i think we're ready for a *drum rolls*... a puppy DOG! so we put our parental instincts to the test again a few weeks ago and successfully harvested some tao-gay from seedlings! quite an amazing feat! yayyy! so i think we're ready!! we've done our homework but owning a dog in cambodia is not the best plan, almost all of the places we want to go to next are so darn strict on their immigration rules. i mean you can't even bring a fruit, a wooden stick or a wife into australia, what more a khmer dog. *sigh* seriously, loosen up, mates!!

anyhow, it doesn't stop us from dreaming up some doggie plans!

daniel's dream dog = golden retriever
my dream dog = chihuahua

hmm.. toughie eh! so we compromised and decided on a medium size (leaning towards smallish) dog and came up with our top favorites!

1) dachshund
great for apartment living and lovely temperament but the poor little dears are prone to back problems... we fell in love with  's babies the ONE time we met! they were super funny running around our feet and rummaging through the trash. thats all they did all night, and stole our hearts.

2) westie
daniel thinks they look like they're always smiling at you. what a lovely thing to come home to! but like any other long hair dog, he/she will shed heaps.. so unless it comes with a dyson vacumn (and a cleaner) thrown in, we'll have to think twice about it.

3) pug
i threw this in cos i really like their face. you just can't get mad at them!! our friends had a pug, milan, who was always on best behavior when we visited so maybe its a sign. all she wanted to do all day is snuggle and follow his mummy around. what a cutie. but daniel has concerns about living with two munchkins in the house, both with night-time respiratory issues. *bah*

4) toy poodle
we had one in our apartment that was the bomb. it had such beautiful eyes and a little wet nose. and he was always so excited to rest his little paws on our feet in the lift. super cute. so we googled his breed and nearly fell off the chair when we found out he's a poodle. who would have thought we're poodle people!! they just seem like such a fussy and prima-donna dog!

5) hapa
a mixed breed. meant to have better immune system and stuff. twice the cuteness too! we checked out a few variations in australia and they all had super cute names like "schnoodle" (poodle + schnauzer), "poogle" (poodle + beagle) and my favorite... "doodle" (dashund and poodle). ahh. im shallow but seriously how cool would it be to say "meet weribee, my doodle!"!!!! (!!!)

my dad-in-law has kindly offered to buy us a dog if and when we settle down in melbourne. he also enthusiatically threw in free baby-sitting services for when we travel. something makes me think he is trying to bribe us to come home! ;)

a madly cute dog (orange poodle) mindy met in japan. i wish she brought him home for us.

  4. Daschunds!! My family had a daschund for 8 years, and then we now have a mini daschund (he's about 5-6 years now). We are absolutely in love with daschunds. Our miniature tends to be a bit needy - if you are the only one at home, he will follow you all the way to the toilet and wait for you until you come out - but I think it's cos we had him when he was soooo small and we pampered him way too much (particularly my mom). Annoying but the cutest thing in my world =)

  5. Sounds great, but whatever you decide on, remember a pet is for life, was showing my students a snippet from the movie Earthlings (which talks about the 5 ways humans mistreat animals as pet, through food, science, entertainment and for clothings, and which made me go vegetarian) about how abandoned pets are put to death in homes and it's terrible how sometimes there are just too many abandoned pets that the homes cannot afford painless ways to put them to sleep. The scenes made them cry, and I haven't even gotten to the gory bits on the section on food of the movie yet!

  6. I love my miniature American Eskie. Good temperament but such a friggin shedder (yes I bought a Dyson shortly after). I think getting the mixed poodles are good because they don't shed at all.
The dog pic is SO cute!

  7. Please don't buy...ADOPT! So many gorgeous dogs out there - purebreed and mixed - that need homes. I have 3 little ones here with me (1 chihuahua, 1 papillon, and 1 mixed chihuahua/terrier) and all were adopted...people always meet and swoon :)
BTW, the long haired dogs don't shed half as much as the medium/short-haired dogs...my chihuahua and the mixed shed like crazy, it's the long haired papillon who fares a lot better and is better for my allergies out of the lot. they're also all taking supplements to help strengthen their coats and reduce shedding, plus brushing them regularly reduces shedding (on surfaces) too...

  8. My ex-boss has two miniature dachshunds and they are really like little girls. When you hugged them, they will rest their head on your chest/neck and stay there contented! Very sa-jiao! Cute!
And toy poodles are really pretty little darlings too!

  13. oh sue's doggie is a westie?? he's very cute. his hair was mopping the floor all the time!! you sure he doesn't shed or is it cos her tiles are white too!?

  15. our top choice! they don't look like the steoreotype "poodle" i have in mind at all! the type with poofy legs and hair that strut down the lanes of champ elysees with their perfectly coiffed owners! :)

  16. good tip! :) we just can't live with a shedder. we're so OCD that we'll probably follow the dog around the house with a vacumn. not a good way to live.

  17. hmm i thought mixed won't shed as much!!
i've got allergies and we wear too much black. whenever we're at my parents place (with two jack russels, one long haired) we lint roll everything, from the clothes we wear to our sheets. just too much hair!!!
we'll definitely consider at the adopting option!!

  18. Oh oh, how about a King Charles' cavalier? Bernice's doggies are all King Charles and so is Charlotte's in SATC!

  19. No! Waff doesn't shed at all actually! It's really the short-haired dogs that shed A LOT. Another friend has a chihuahua and I fear going to her house cos I always get lots of hair on my clothes after. :(
Yah, the westie is the NYDC's logo dog. hehe.

  20. too shaggy i think!! plus i think 5 breeds choose one is a hellavu decision already!! :) :) :)

  21. i think its like humans, dependant on dog. my jack russels, both short and long hair shed like mad!, im sure they will have receding hairline soon or something...

  22. they do.. but that's where the diet comes in. As long as you don't overfeed them, they won't get too fat and it won't strain their backs. It doesn't stop them from breaking their backs to jump on couches to watch tv with you though. Heheh

  23. my dog is a lhasa apso- they are the best...of course hahhaa!! but about the long hair, believe it or not long hair does not shed as easily and often as short hair...reallys sticky to have to vacuum short hairs out of the carpet or bedding- they just get so caught in the fibers :( on the other hand long hair and tropical environment not too ideal so I usually cut tasha's fur off as soon as it gets too long!!! lemme know what you get this is SO exciting!! can you name her princesss!!! :))) xxx
